Another Craigslist search led me to this gem of a band. Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird. Their Myspace page says they play the following: Punk Cabaret, Radical Yiddish, Gothic American Folk, and Klesmer Danse Macabre. The singer is a one Daniel Kahn, originally from Detroit playing Accordion, Piano and Guitar. An East German Clarinet player, (my favorite fucking instrument might I add) Bert Hildebrandt, Michael Tuttle from Michigan playing the Upright Bass (my second favorite instrument) and an ever rotating band of musicians from Berlin and New York. They formed in 2005 in the great city of Berlin. Some of their influences make up some of my favorite recording artists to date.
So back to Craigslist, I was searching for things to do and came across an ad to be an extra in a music video, naturally I replied. We were instructed to dress as workers and were warned we would be very cold as the shoot was outside by an old run down factory from DDR. I got there at 12:00 and stayed until the bitter end, we learned some Yiddish dances, got to picket, protest, march and in the end attack the Painted Bird. I won't give away any more of the video as I'm sure you'd appreciate the surprise. Pasta, bourbon, beer and tea was offered as there was no pay and for those of us who stuck it out all day, we received a copy of the new CD (as yet to be released) and a sticker as thanks for comprising the "Jobless Corps".
I also got to dance with a very cute Andrej, a Macedonian from Germany and I even made a couple friends, Anna and Colleen from Seattle, of all places. They said I have some funny Canadian-isms, but wouldn't reveal to me just what they were. I have been told this by several Americans though, and they all refuse to tell. We also met a kid named Jakob, pronounced Yakob, a know-it-all-know-nothing little shit who tried to convince us that most women out there don't have the taste buds to enjoy beer, the women who do... are of course lesbians.
