Dazed and Confused

Love/Hate relationship going on here in Amsterdam. Things I love; the canals, oh the canals, swans, houseboats, baby ducks, architecture, the lizard park, fresh scones with creme fraiche and apricot jam, van Gogh, Vondel Park, stroop waffles, bikes, bikes everywhere! Things I love not so much; money sucking hole that is Amsterdam, koffie shops, losers who come to Amsterdam just for koffie shops, reggae, how these beautiful cities feel like their whole city has been converted into a tourist attraction.

I am trying very hard to think if cities in Canada have this vibe, Vancouver certainly doesn't, ok maybe the one block of Gastown... but for the most part I don't see as many souvenir shops and campy museums as I have here in Amsterdam. Is that just because Canada is so much younger than cities in Europe? For some reason, I doubt it, but perhaps that's it.

There was an interesting exhibit at the Van Gogh museum, Picasso in Paris. It displayed the art produced during his time in Paris, his influences, which museums and cafes he frequented to study, his friends, the art of his friends, the stages his work went through. It was nice to see after having just been to Paris myself. I am also, funnily enough reading a book by Honore de Balzac, The Girl With the Golden Eyes, (book exchange in Rotterdam) also set in Paris. The van Gogh works were gorgeous and all so different in their own way. I remember him being one of my favroites when I was a kid, I vaguely remember seeing a movie about his life with my parents when I was about eight (maybe Dad can help me out here??) and falling in love with him, you know, if that's possible for a little girl in 1990 and an artist who died in 1890...

I saw my first baby ducks of the year on the canal today. They were as always so fluffy and to die for. Tomorrow, I'm headed to Stuttgart. I haven't been there since September, I think I'll stay for about a month because I really have not spent so much time around my family yet, have been in Germany for nearly nine months... ahem.
